Trump says he’ll free this Bitcoin drug lord. But Ross Ulbricht belongs in prison

Donald Trump says drug dealers deserve the death penalty.

But he has pledged to pardon Ross Ulbricht, the mastermind behind the illegal online drugs and guns marketplace called Silk Road.

Ulbricht received a life sentence for his crimes. His case has become a popular cause among crypto bros and libertarians, who say he deserves freedom.

But while I strongly oppose the Drug War and mass incarceration, I believe Ulbricht belongs in prison. In today's San Francisco Chronicle, I make the case for why Ulbricht's anti-government extremism – and his alleged willingness to commit multiple murders to protect his drug operation – justify his harsh sentence.
